Work in different German youth and social welfare organisations.
1989-1995 - German Red Cross, Headquarters, Social Welfare Division, initially in the Social Policy Unit, then European Representative of the German Red Cross.
Since 1995 - European Commission, initially in DG V (Employment and Social Affairs); since 2000 DG Health and Consumer Protection, Public Health Directorate. Until 2003 in policy analysis and development, working on general health policy.
Since September 2003 in the Health Determinants unit, with responsibility for social and environmental determinants.
June 2004 – Deputy Head of Unit
November 2005 – Head of Unit (responsibilities include nutrition and physical activity, mental and sexual health, addictions (tobacco prevention, alcohol and drugs), and wider determinants of health).
